i picked my first tomato! (my long ass gardening entry for this month)

it’s awesome. i can’t wait to eat it.

my poor gardens have been neglected a little bit, (the mosquitoes are hellish right now) but jon bought me two forty pound bags of awesome potting soil/compost so my lovelies are looking much better now. i also finally got the weeds under control and got newspaper laid out to help keep them down.

my main basil plant is ginormous. i finally repotted the two smaller ones into bigger containers so they are going to start taking off soon. im going to see if anyone on craigslist want to trade with me for some something different. planning on doing the same thing with some bell pepper seedlings, and maybe a cantaloupe and honeydew that are about ready to be transplanted to the ground.

i gave away all my basil seeds this year so i have to make sure to save seeds when they set this year. im glad the new roommate is a gardener so i have someone to rely on while we are gone since the seeds are probably going to be set during our trip.

my herbs have really taken off since ive pruned out the old growth and started cutting them back more vigorously. the lemon thyme especially, and my marjoram is finally starting to fill out. since my basil has been producing so much ive been freezing the leaves to use later.

my watermelon is getting big, but im really starting to be convinced i planted in a poor spot. it doesnt get nearly enough sunlight- the vines are thin and scraggly, the leaves weak. then again, i didnt really have much of a choice. and the watermelon dilemma is going to be repeated with my cantaloupes and honeydews. i just dont want to plant them out in the middle of the yard (the only other spot that is cleared) since it is so constantly overgrown. then again….

i guess i could just use all the leaves in the backyard as mulch, but im going to ask daniel about what trees it is that kills whatever tries to grow under it because of a chemical that is released when the leaves compost. i obviously dont want that to happen.

im sad that my jasmine and honeysuckle cuttings didnt take, but then again i also should have used rooting hormone. i was kind of doing it on the fly while i was stoned one day. i also probably shouldnt leave them outside since it’s so freakin hot already.

my ageranthum is still going really strong, which is really surprising to me. i figured the heat would have killed it off, but my marigolds seem to be more affected than anything else. i decided that i didnt have nearly enough aesthetic plants in my garden, since my morning glories still havent produced any flowers, so i went and transplanted some funny looking foliage plants our of the backyard. i hope they take; i did a really good job recreating the habitat as far as drainage and ground cover go. i just hope they will be cool enough since the front yard is way hotter than the back, even with the shade from the porch (where they are sitting).

im disappointed by some of the things i tried to plant. it’s my fault though, i started a few things way too late. carrots, spinach, salad greens, cilantro, and dill all need to be planted way earlier next time.

alright, done talking about plants.
